good wine with cigars?

I always like a nice Port. Bin #27 is always good. Genraly I prefer a single malt.

I'm a big wine fan. I've been stocking up a couple of bottles a week to keep around the house for a couple of months now. My favorite wine is Merlot, but I also enjoy a good Riesling (at the lady's always love it)

Rieslings are good as long as you get one that is not too sweet. I usually like Pinot Gregio also....much more refreshing and not as dry as most Chardonay.

Merlot is definitely my favorite red...and there are a lot of good Zinfandels out there too...a little spicier in flavor that Merlot....could compliment certain cigars well I would imagine.

You guys crack me up.

Many people prefer port with cigars. At this point, I've tried a very limited number of ports and the one's that I liked I can't remember what they were. There's a guy on CW who has a recommendation for a great inexpensive port to go with cigars. I just sent him a PM and I'll post it when he sends me a reply.

Others like cognac with cigars. I would NOT recommend cheap cognacs because they taste like crap. I won't waste space here giving you guys a cognac "primer" but just trust my word here that you should try a nice XO rather than a VS or a VSOP. They are more expensive but they are worth it. If you don't want to shell out the $$ for an XO, buy Remy-Martin VSOP.

As far as wines, for white I like Pinot Grigio. I don't like Chardonnays and I hate Riesling, YUK

For reds, I'm not a shiraz or a merlot fan. I like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Well, it didn't take long for DocRKS to get back to me about the port. Here's what he said:

Graham's LBV (Late Bottle Vintage) 1997 --- still available but getting harder to find - tons of the 1998 available --pretty good as well.
Aprox $ = $15 -$17 per bottle.

I remember that it was the best port I've had (again, my experience with port is very limited) with a cigar. I trust DocRKS judgement in this department.

I'm a big fan of the Chateau St. Michelle Johannesburg Riesling from the Columbia Valley (Washington State). Its relatively cheap and great ice cold.

I agree with you there. For mild to medium cigars I prefer an Islay or Speyside scotch. For the bolder cigars Highland or Lowland seems to be better.

Also, I have tried several scotches and found that you don't need to spend a ton on a good single malt. I have a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue which, while very good, doesn't have the smoothness that a bottle of Longmorn does. The Blue being over $200 a bottle and the Longmorn less than $60. In all fairness though the Blue isn't a single malt strictly speaking.

Actually, it really dpends on many things. Like choosing a wine for a good meal, the beverage you drink with a cigar depends on the cigar. It can also depend on what you just ate as well. If you just got done with a thick juicy steak your cigar/drink choice will be different than if you had a light meal.

Generally I like a rum and coke, striaght rum, or a double Crown Royal on the rocks with many of the cigars I smoke. Sometimes it is a good merlot.

However, remember that I am new to cigars and this is merely what I have found to be true for me. The most improtant thing to remember is that the best is what YOU enjoy not what everyone else says is the best.
