I smoke on the back patio when the weather is good and if my wife is sitting with me she always lights up the chiminea and smokes the place up with pinion pine....this seems to keep the flies away.
I always smoke outside and the propane tank is the way to go... I also find that if you can get enough buddies to smoke with you, the smoke from some good sticks keeps the bugs away as well.

bugs never seam to bother me.
The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done." -unknown

I think OFF makes a yard fogger. You spray it about 5 or 10 minutes before you go out, by then the smell is gone and it last for 4 hours or so.
