Default Tales of Intolerance - Share your experiences

I thought I'd start sharing my experiences as I smoke outside at Starbucks often, up to 5-6 times per week.

I never intend to irritate people, I always try to be considerate. I try to sit downwind, and I try to occupy a table on the outside patio that is far from anyone else. But sometimes there are lots of non smokers sitting outside and I have no choice but to sit close to them or to sit upwind.

So this morning, I have no choices. Lots of nonsmokers sitting downwind. Oh well. So I light up. There are three people sitting downwind from me two tables down. As soon as I light up, before the first swirl of smoke has left the vicinity of my head, with no possibility of it invading their space, one of these SKWMFSM (skinny ass white MF soccer moms that sit around and make a bunch of noise and chatter endlessly about inane things) coughs up a lung and pulls her sweater over her face.

She then shoots me an evil, god-I-hate-your-guts glare, and after a few minutes of theatrics, they move inside.

It makes me wonder - these are probably of the Tolerance crowd - if you don't like something, your an intolerant hater. But I guess Tolerance is only for things you like. If you don't like it, then it's not intolerance. Makes me really intolerant of the word intolerant as it is totally subjective and used to death and used very selfishly nowadays.

I wonder if these people ever figure out whey there are so many smokers of all stripes gathering at Starbucks. They offer outside patios at most locations, and this one has an excellent patio that is well covered so you are protected from the rain and sun. Pipes, cigars and cigs are being smoked there often. As we have been forced outside by most places going nonsmoking, by legislative fiat or the choice of business owners (the former being discriminatory, the latter being totally legitimate in my book), these SKWMFSM should be able to figure out they have made their own bed, now they need to lie in it.

I figured I'd start sharing these experiences, as they happen often. Feel free to share your own.

It's the anti-smoking movement my man. You are allowed to be rude when it comes to oppposing tobacco use, and any area, inside or outside, is assumed to be non-smoking by the simple presence of a non-smoker. Cigar smoking is considered by many to be the worst smoking offense one can commit.

Well I am going to continue my silent resistance to the anti-smoking movement. Even when a anti-smoking law passes in my area (as I'm sure it will), I will continue to smoke outside. If anyone dares challenge me, I can give and take as well as they can, and will not back down.

Well it was a good day today for cigar smokers in my area. It's 47 degrees with a slight wind, so all the non-smokers were inside, and the smokers were outside all bundled up nice and toasty, drinking hot coffee, and smoking. I was the only one with a cigar, true, but I count all smokers as brothers in arms in this fight. So as each cigarette smoker joined me, I tipped my cup in salute to my brothers in arms. Enjoyed a nice cigar, listened to my new Ipod touch and read a book, enjoying the solace free of the anti-smoking, intolerant tolerance crowd. Viva la resitance!!!!

I agree. That's why I always ask before lighting up among non-smokers. Every little conflict just contributes to their cause. I only light up among those who appreciate the pleasant aroma of a good cigar. Damn I hate to waste good smoke on a grouchy, snotty-nosed, opinionated, loud mouth.

However, there are always exceptions. I know quite a few non-smokers who actually like to smell a cigar or pipe. So you really can't blame all non-smokers for a bum rap, it's just those looking for a way to increase the tax on something they don't buy.

Well I'm a big guy too so no one has ever confronted me directly, but I do get a bunch of snotty attitudes and glares.

yeah at 6'1" and 255 with a crew cut no one talks shit to me, directly. Its those slimy smirks of rude actions that i hate but thats all i ever get hit with. I guess it beats the confrontational shit though.

I'm on good terms with all the folks who work at my Starbucks. Been going there almost daily for over three years now. Several are cigarette smokers and we talk when they come outside.

Starbucks puts plastic ashtrays outside but with attrition they wear out, go missing, etc. So sometimes there are on ashtrays. Except for me; I always have my Colibri duo cig/cigar ashtray, so smokers come over and ask if they can share it, and I say sure, us underdogs gotta stick together man!
