Thread: Alright, Sarah's got some car problems ...

Default Alright, Sarah's got some car problems ...

She's got a 97 Toyota Camry, and it's acting like someone's trying to break in. She can't start her car and can't open the door without the alarm going off. She had the original key but the 'lock, unlock, alarm' part of it broke off months ago so she's been using a spare key. I'd like to keep from towing it in, ecspecially since it's not worth $200+ just to tow it. So if anyone's got any ideas that would be great.

My suggestion was to go and get a duplicate of the original key, with the unlock thing on it. I don't know what else to do.

    Any help would be appreciated.

If it's too complicated to type out, feel free to PM me and get my number.
    Thanks dooods.

Usually once you put the key inside the ignition there should be some way to shut off the anti-theft BS. It sounds like she has a kill switch, so there should be a way to disable it. Try looking at the manual.
    End of line.

Try disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery and leaving it for a few minutes. This should reset the computer and hopefully the anti-theft as well.

That may do the trick, or pulling the fuse & the relay for the alarm, but sometimes they wont start after doing that, alot of it is computer controlled and need the key fob to disable it. If you /her plan on keeping the car i would get another key from Toyota (quick) or even ebay (days, weeks). Or just call a toyo dealer (but its better to go in and talk with the "service writer") and ask him how to undo the alarm or set the code on the key fob if you get one from ebay.

    Try this link. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...6&postcount=15

There are lots of posts about programming additional remotes. I'm sure there's a way to disable it as well. Is there a black box with a green button under the driver's seat?

Hear is an online version of the repair manual if you are really feeling extreme.

Default Doesn't hurt to try this

I don't know if this will work for a Toyota, but my daughter has a Nissan 240, and for some strange reason she has to either unlock her passenger side door, or open her trunk before she unlocks her driver's side door or starts the car. We bought the car used without the keyless fob, and about 3 months after we got it, it started acting up. I have no idea if this will work, but for a Nissan it works.

Easy fix. You should have PM'd me in the beginning, Chris. Reconnect the red wire on the Flux Capacitor and all will be back to normal.
Mama said a lot of things and be thankful was the one she never minded saying twice

i made a flux capacitor joke to her one time expecting her to not know what I'm talking about. I was wrong. I think I'm still winning for coolest girlfriend ever.

So here's the update. Had it towed (insurance covered) to the Toyota place and they stripped the alarm out of it and replaced the battery. Little over $300. Now she's up and running again.

Thank you guys for all your help.
