Hey guys,
So yeah, I registered to this forum recently. I just wanted a place to ask questions and discuss cigars. I guess you can say I’m new to smoking cigars. I’ve been smoking them occasionally for three years, but never regularly (due to money constraints as a college student, haha). Speaking of college, I’m a graduate in Electrical Engineering. Yes, thank you thank you, I quite enjoy the working life now, but it’s not as blissful as I expected it to be (I still don’t have my BMW yet, and college loans hurt…bad).
I’ve been looking around online for general advice on smoking, so I thought I’d join up here so I could ask questions to some of the more experienced among you.
Sooo… to start off, I’d just like to say I’m always pretty unconfident when it comes to cutting a cigar. Probably because I’ve messed up real bad at times, like a few days ago when I tried to cut a Davidoff 2000, and the external wrapping came off >.<
In my defense though, it doesn’t happy too often.
A guy at the cigar shop told me that if I cut a cigar perfectly, a ring around the cigar ought to come off neatly after the cut. That never happened to me.
I never buy torpedos since I wouldn’t have a good idea on where to cut on them. I do find with the Parejos most of the time I guess.
Favorite cigar as of yet? Probably Ashton VSG. Everytime I buy cigars, I include.
Cigars I’ve smoked recently:
Davidoff 1000
Davidoff Lonsdale Millennium Edition
Opus X
Montecristo (For the life of me I can’t remember which one. It had a white label though)
Cao Gold
As for tasting, I’m still having difficulty. All I can tell for now is that I like some cigars over others. Mostly it has to do with smoothness I think. For example, I absolutely loved the Davidoff 1000. I bet they come in different sizes, but I had a really small/skinny one. It was just beautiful. Sooo smooth. The Ashton VSG is smooth and heavy, it’s the only cigar I could buy a box of and be sure that I’ll enjoy it.
I wish I could remember the Montecristo I once smoked at a cigar bar, it was real smooth and creamy-like. Yeah, I know, not much to go on.
I’ve read around here that Davidoffs are just sometimes not worth the price, and I guess after smoking the Lonsdale, I kind of agree. It wasn’t that special, and I paid a lot of money for it. I smoked another Davidoff a long long time ago, and I remember it being amazing, but I can’t remember which one it was
Opus X? I love this cigar too, but it’s sometimes too strong for me. I remember the first time I smoked it, I puked after I was a little more than half way through. I’m used to it now though, and it’s also one of my favorite cigars (not as beloved as the Ashton VSG).
I smoked the CAO yesterday, it was okay, decent smoke for the 5 USD I paid for it. I read somewhere it’s a good smoke for beginniners. Eh, it didn’t have that gravitas that I like in a cigar, but it was okay. I think I’m going to try a CAO Black next.
So yeah. Sorry about the long post, and kudos to you if you read through it, I’d be surprised. I hope it was meaningful to read.
If anyone has any recommendations for me, feel free to tell me! I’m particularly interested in trying Montecristos and Davidoffs, but anything else you guys can recommend would be great.
Oh, also, as a side note: I remember smoking some strong Hondurans once a long time ago, (again I don’t remember), and just like with the Opus X, I hurled. I’d like to try some of these again, so if anyone has pointers, let me know.
And yes, I’ve started collecting cigar labels. From now on I shall know what I smoked.
