Thread: First Humidor: Ready to Buy

  1. Talking First Humidor: Ready to Buy

    Ok guys ,

I'm ready to make the plunge and buy my first humidor....

I wanted one where I could:

    - Show off my cigars
    - One that had a lock in it
    - Quality construction and will do the job

    And the winner is: http://www.cubancrafters.com/products.php/item_id/2630

I also noticed this one that was rosewood for $10 less:

    - http://www.cubancrafters.com/products.php/item_id/2633. Why is cherry more expensive?

Did some research on 'Cuban Crafters' and they seem to have EXCELLENT customer service (one reason for buying). I even saw some feedback that was negative and they responded to see what they could do to solve the issue! That really impressed me. Also checked the reviews and people seem to be really happy with theirs. Anyone deal with this company?

I'm having a lot of fun going to the local shop in town and trying new things....I've found some ones I'd definitely like to buy online and store in a humidor...as well as investing in some sampler packs.

Just curious to hear your feedback, being a newbie and all. Fire away

Very nice...But you will soon become obsessive compulsive and need a coolerdor.

I had that same humidor from them, got it off ebay for 40. Great humidor, but like the sarge said, I left that for my father and upgraded to the coolidor this past week. Much better choice.

The humidors you are looking at are fine. Either will work quite nicely.

The rosewood is less most likely because it is a less popular seller for them.

The wood these are made of is solid spanish cedar. There is no real cherry wood or rosewood used.

Check out a posting I made some time ago at this link:

    http://www.cigarsmokers.com/showthre...1&page=2&pp=10

Again, the humidors you're lookng at are fine. Just not expensive.

Just for shits and giggles check out this next site. It's a site operated by Arlin LIss. Arlin makes serious, hand made humidors out of real hardwoods and exotics with actual cedar liners. His handmade stuff sells for thousands of dollars.

On the other hand, you can get a cabinet humidor, hand made, real hardwoods for a reasonable cost. Check out Bob Staebell's site here:

    www.aristocrathumidors.com

Don't be discouraged. A $69 humidor is perfectly fine!

    Not a bad-looking little humi.

I have one of their 40-50 cigar models and I'm quite happy with it...

I bought a glass top humi but after a couple weeks I ended up selling it to a friend and I went and bought a solid top humi. The reason for this is that sunlight ect can affect your cigars in a negative way. Also I found the solid top humi's have a little bit more cedar in them and may as a result hold more moisture then the others. Also, who knows how well the glass is sealed when the humi's are mass produced. Besides, it just looks shoddy unless you have only premium sticks on the top tray, and even then, as your humi fills up the top tray will look less and less organized Just my two cents

Great feedback from everyone. Thanks for taking the time to respond, much appreciated!

As Roham Said, I would get a solid top humidor if you plan to put it neat direct sunlight.

    Default Oh my God!

I've been bagged by the man himself!

I just got a quick note from Arlin Liss reminding me that Bob Staebell's humidors are a laminated MDF humidor (which is still OK) not hardwood.

Sorry Arlin! (your humidors are still nicer but so-o-o-o-o expensive!)

Default Now wait just a damned minute!

I just noticed that Arlin Liss is a junior member here and has ZERO postings.

OK...OK......it's SFG posing as Arlin Liss isn't it! Or is it IE?!!!

I suppose Arlin could have a bot out on the web looking for any entries for "Arlin Liss" though, couldn't he.

    Hmmmmmm......

Regardless I do stand corrected. Bob S. uses laminated MDF whereas Arlin uses only hardwoods and other exotics.

It's probably not good idea to put even a solid top humi in direct sunlight. Too much temperature variation during the day. Long term this'll mess up the humi not to mention your smokes. I would expect that this is less of a factor in Nova Scotia than in Texas.

  14. Talking Thanks!

    Thanks once again guys!

After listening to your feedback and feeback from the cigar shop I go to, it sounds like a 'glasstop' humidor for effectively storing cigars is NOT really the way to go. Really glad I asked for feedback, thanks!

Still think I may go with a cubancrafters one. I've heard good things about their humidors, and also I'm pretty impressed by their customer service as well (big plus).

I'm in between these two now:

Trying to hold out in buying now (difficult), have a birthday next month :). I can't seem to convince anyone to get me one as an 'early' present. Doh!

I like the one without handles, myself, but if you're planning to take your cigars to sea with you, maybe the other is better

Unless I can give someone a model number, I don't ask for something that requires research. If I asked anyone in my family for a humidor, I'd get a cigar box or some handmade plywood wonder...

Heh :). My girlfriend gives me the evil eye and tells me I have NO patience (which is true) and to be patient regarding this gift.

I think I may just have to use the logic that it will: take time to get the humidor, time to calibrate/season it.....and when all of that happens, it'll be just in time to store cigars which should be around the time of my birthday :).
