    Default dark beers

So I'll be 21 next week. Since odds are I'll be going to a few bars, was looking for some suggestions on some very dark beers. I tend to hate beer, the closest I've came to liking one was a Yueingling(sp?) lager. So I figured if I can find a very dark beer then perhaps I would enjoy one. So any suggestions for a dark beer that I may be able to find around here?

try some stouts... samuel smith oatmeal stout is pretty good

if you can go to a local microbrewery and try a bunch of their beers... IMO microbreweries are almost always way better then 90% of the beers at the liqour stores...

    Happy 21st!

I like Guiness but the bitterness takes a bit of getting used to. A really nicely kept pint of Guiness is one of life's real treats.

Oatmeal Stout is smoother and makes for an interesting change of pace. Bottles of Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout are fairly easy to find in the better liquor stores and bars in Houston: a couple of places even have it on tap. Mmmmm.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout is pretty tasty.

i'm not sure if it is considered 'dark' but you might want to try Negro Modelo. its a mexican beer that is somewhere in between a MGD and Guiness.

This is my absolute FAVORITE beer! It's not dark but man it is AWESOME!!! Certainly give this one a try!!!

A few others that rank high on my list are:

    Red Stripe
Cerveca Aguila (brazilian I believe, very good)
    Killian's Red
    Pete's Wicked Ale
I am also a big fan of the St. Arnolds Summer Ale but not sure you can still find it this late in the year.

Happy 21st brother! Have a great birthday!!!

    thanks man

I wasn't really expecting so many different types of beers, alot more out there than I thought. I have a mile long list now.

I'm gonna hopefully try and find some before I actually go out to the bars and test them that way I have an idea of a few I like.

The bars around here are as bad as the cigar shops. The taps have Rickards, Sleeman's, Molson, Bud and Coors. Thuper. I like some of those, but would like to try something new...and microbrewed. The liquor stores aren;t much better. They have a small selection on less-common beers, but I've pretty much worked through those already.

Well got a thing of Guinness Extra Stout today to try, gonna test it out later during the fight. Would you guys suggest a full flavored cigar with it?

Not a big fan of dark beer, I guess it is too rich. If I am buying, my personal favorite is Dos Equis (XX) Amber. It may not be the best or anything, but everyone has their preferences and that is my personal favorite.

i don't mean to insult anyones taste but imo guiness is terrible. i prefer to drink not chew my beer. but i was reading an article about the proper way to drink beer and i am not doing it anywhere near right as far as that's concerned so what do i know.

I just read through the thread and didn't see the most obvious question..... Why a dark beer? I do agree with many of the replies that a micro brew or pub is the best place to go exploring. Most will let you sample one you're interested in trying. I would find the one you like, and enjoy, regardless of color! Having been a beer drinker and cigar smoker for 20+ years now, I have found that ratings, peer pressure, and fads have little to do with actual enjoyment. Enjoy your new found (and now legal) passion.

I don't think I'd go that far, but definitely overrated.

Have you been suctioning it through your nose?

Well... the obvious choice is Guinness... availible everywhere, brewed since 1759... tried and true. Warsteiner Premium Dunkel is another of my personal favorites... be sure it's the dark and not regular Warsteiner... huge difference in taste there.

Well damn, thanks for the quick replies. I'm gonna have to keep a list with me, although I may look a little weird reading off a list at the bars asking which of these they have

Oh and thanks for the Happy B-day C.G.

The only beer I would buy is Guiness.

    Hey, man, happy birthday!

My gf turns 21 on Oct 4, when's yours?

Hmm... "dark" beers... These guys have suggested stouts, which are often a good choice if you're not really a beer drinker, but they can be a little filling.

You may want to look in the direction of a brown or mild (Newcastle being a classic example; Pete's Wicked probably fits into this category as well).

Porter might be a good option, as well. Porter tends to be a lighter version of a stout ("historically" it's a pale and a stout blended together, like a black & tan). Porters tend to be a little roasty, but if you're a smoker, you might like that flavor.

Completely out of left field, you may want to try a Wit (White), weizen, or hefeweizen (wheat beers) might be a good call. These beers are completely hit or miss, but a lot of people that "don't like beer" tend to like hefeweizen. Hoegaarden and Blue Moon Belgian White are easy examples, but anything that has "white" or "wheat" or "weizen" in the title works.

I hardly know the difference between a stout and porter, lager or ale. Alls I know is I like beer...all kinds.

    Try Shiner Bock. It's dark.
There's a Newcastle Brown that's mighty fine too.

New Castle is my personal favorite. Brooklyn Brown Ale is a good one too.

September 28th, so it'll be here pretty soon, a shame it falls on a wed. instead of the weekend, but oh well. As for the "white" "wheat" "weizen" Think they would be hard to come by?

I went to the Guinness site and I think I'm going to go with the Guinness Extra Stout if the bars have them.
