Taste is altered due to things like amount of filler/binder versus wrapper. A lower ring gauge will mean you taste the wrapper more then the filler/binder. The ring gauge and length will also affect the temperature of the smoke when it hits your lips. All these things can dramatically change the taste of one smoke versus another, even if the same types of tobacco are used.
Generally speaking the cooler the smoke the better, ie: longer lengths and ring gauges may be preferred. Or just taking time in between puffs to allow the cigar to cool
