    Default What Would YOU Do?

Inspired by DG's thread a little while back, I made more of a conscious effort to reach out to other cigar smokers I work with here at my new job. After some searching and talking, I found one in particular - of the upper management variety. Most other employees here, if they smoke, they smoke cigarettes, or cigars are a more passive hobby. Anyway, today being Friday, I decided to bring him a few cigars, for his weekend. He was out of his office, but I left him a note and the cigars, and just figured that was that. Kind gesture made.

He comes in to my office about an hour later with the smokes. He recently quit due to health reasons. We talked for a bit about the hobby, and then he told me that he still has a humidor in his office with only ISOM's, and if ever I wanted one.....

I have to say I'm torn. On one hand, I want to try to be polite, but on the other....

    What would YOU do?

I doubt that I would ask for one. If, however, he came into my office and handed me one and insisted that I enjoy it.....I would graciously accept.

I agree with Ash. I would spend some time getting to know him on a personal and work level. That way you develop a relationship with someone higher up on the food chain which may be helpful down the road. If it were me I wouldn't ask for the ISOM's either. Perhaps through getting to know the guy he will end up giving them to you, if not, at least you built another professional relationship.

You have to read between the lines... He needs you to remove those cigars from his humi -- he has health issues and a weak will -- he knows he'll smoke them all -- he knows he can't bring himself to get rid of them -- HE NEEDS YOU TO DO THE RIGHT THING. Now march up there and grab all of those glorious smokes before the poor bastard kills himself -- and leave a note as follows: "You're welcome."

Well, if it were me... but then again, I don't have many opportunities to get ISOM's. Maybe offer to purchase them off him, that'll kill that guilty conscience!

    Sound policy right there!

You could accept one, sniff it, roll it between your fingers, and proclaim it to be the absolute WORST fake you have ever seen... followed by a report on everything you saw after following his daughter into the ladies room... Then sit in his chair and light up a grape white owl. You will be remembered in song and story for all time.

ashauler said it best. Since this isn't a personal friend raiding his box is a bad thing.

I would agree with ashauler. I would only take them if he handed them to me.

I don't see why you're "torn." He offered you cigars he's never going to smoke. Take them.

I don't think (from what I'm reading) that the offer was out there. I think he intimated he had ISOM's in the humi - and that he was no longer smoking cigars. Maybe it's a bit of a goad on the manager's side, but it would be wise to consider all options before openly asking for a cigar.

Beaides - they're likely fakes anyway...

If its a simple desktop, it might have a dozen or two sticks in it and they are most likely drying out. Offer to purchase them for a fair price. He'll most likely then just grab the humi and hand it to you. Worst case, you'll be out a fair price for what are most likely nice sticks.
